The global metals and mining industry has expanded significantly since the year 2001, largely due to the rapid growth of the emerging economies in Asia-Pacific. In 2005, the global metals and mining industry generated total revenues of $1.3 trillion, with coal mining the second largest sector after steel. With this global expansion and increased demand, mine-safety becomes critical to the day-to-day operation.

iPackets’ current addressable market is under ground coal mines in North America and China. In the United States, the MINER Act of 2006 requires every under ground coal mine operator in the United States to submit plans to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) of implementing a wireless tracking, monitoring, and communications mine-safety system by June 2009. In China, with several thousands of miners loosing their lives, mine-safety is becoming a government top priority. Chinese coal operators are under increased pressure to improve mine-safety in their operations.

For future expansion, iPackets continues to look for opportunities to expand world-wide through local partnerships.
